What is proper fuel pressure for 1990 454 TBI?kuehjo 07-28-2006, 11:53 AM Haynes manual (I know - woefully inadequate) says 26-32 psi. Curious, because I'm having a starting problem, and one of the issues is that I'm only getting 14 psi with the NEW fuel pump (was getting 12 with the old one). I'm thinking the regulator may be at fault as it does bleed down quite quickly. Thanks! Jonathan 2000CAYukon 07-28-2006, 01:04 PM I have the factory service manuals for 1990 at home (at work right now) and I can tell you that the proper fuel pressure for the 350 is 9 - 13 PSI. I don't recall if the 454 has different pressure than the 350. I know the injectors are different but not sure on the pressure. I will take a look tonight and post the number for 454. //2000CAYukon kuehjo 07-28-2006, 02:28 PM Thanks - I REALLY appreciate it. Got my eye on EBay for a factory manual, but have been scooped twice! The Haynes manual states that the big block engines got a heavy duty pump that was supposed to generate more pressure than the small block. 9-13 for the sbc, 26-32 for the bbc (if I'm reading things correctly). Seems like a pretty big difference, but that's the only reference i have at the moment. I went ahead and picked up a regulator repair kit, and will probably go ahead and install it, but it's getting frustrating (me and about half the rest of us, it seems!) kuehjo 07-29-2006, 01:28 PM Still hunting... Autozone web site says fuel line pressure should be 9-13 as well. They don't seem to differentiate between SBC and BBC. I may have to run over to Kragen and see what the Chilton's manual says, now. If any has a genuine factory service manual, and can check on this for me, I would be most grateful. If it ends up that an Ebay auction finally goes my way and i get one first, I'll post back, just in case anyone else was wondering, too... 2000CAYukon 07-30-2006, 05:33 PM Sorry for the late reply. The factory manual states 9-13 PSI for all engines. //2000CAYukon kuehjo 07-31-2006, 03:46 PM Not a problem! Thanks for taking the time. I am VERY glad to hear that, since i went to the trouble of replacing the fuel pump, believing that to be the problem. Hmmm - very little change in fuel pressure. Ok - COULD be bad pump, but let's check regulator first. Sure enough - clamp off return line and pressure jets up over 40 PSI (then i turned the key off). All right - rebuild regulator (not difficult at all, but another $35). Crap. STILL only getting 14 PSI at fuel filter inlet. Well, at least I'm getting injector spray from both nozzles when i go and check. So I go back to looking at spark. I have spark when it turns over, and i have timing chain cover off, so I can verify TDC and that i have NOT skipped a tooth. So I check spark wires - all correct. Pull cap and voila - off by at LEAST one tooth. Someone TRIED to fix the problem and failed. So i corrected the distributor position, but now I'll need to reset static timing till i can get her running, and then throw the timing light on it. Sigh. Ain't gonna happen this week - off to Korea for two weeks, so i guess I'll have to update you all when i get back. Thanks again for the help!
