2002 Chevy Venture, problems with cooling fan?

We have a 2002 Chevy Venture which we have a cooling problem with, appears to be related with the fans need to keep the AC cranked in order for the fans to come on and cool the engine, fans do not appear to come on any other time after spending $1,400. our mechanic still did not resolve the problem. Compressor was replaced and one of the fan relays were replaced as well, vehicle will not start after running for approx 30 min to 1 hr without letting it set to cool for about 30 min. Temp guage does not indicate over heating...

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks..

Hi Lemken - Welcome to the forum!

$1,400 - Wow. I hope that was not just to get the fans running.

I have a page here that shows how the cooling system fans work. What I would do is replace ALL THREE relays and see what happens. Or you could troubleshoot to find out exactly what is wrong. There could be a loose or dirty connection to one of the relays.

Take Care,

Re: 2002 Chevy Venture, problems with cooling fan?

good info GregA. I think the important point to make about the fans is the way the do high and low speed.

From GregA's circuit posting, you can see that the low speed setting has the fans running in series mode--that is the power runs through one fan and then on through the other fan. Should there be a wiring problem with either fan motor, low speed is not going to work at all.

In high speed mode, the fans run independently from each other, but high speed mode is not often called for as the temps need to get beyond 230 or so.

You can test the fan circuits manually by removing the pcm and grounding pins 5 or 6 by using a jumper on the connector pins.
If high speed works on one fan only but there is no low speed you have a bad fan motor or wiring to that motor.
