98 Blazer Fuel Pump Whinning noise Then it stalls Please Helpbtmoore1 07-22-2006, 11:15 PM Near the end of the day today it started stalling again when its parked just idoling. I can hear the fuel pump humming and right before it dies it make a higher pitch noise. I'm wondering if it is the the fuel pump going out? Someone told me that the ignition switch could be the problem and others told me that the pump will just go out without warning. It does seem like it is loud for the fuel pump and it doesn't make the loud pitch humming noise until it has been runnig for a while. Any suggestions? Hard to start cold. Check cold start fuel pressure. Check engine running fuel pressure. Check engine running on the road fuel pressure. Then shut it off and watch for fast leak down. Pinch off at rubber part or block off return line and check full pressure. Later V6 and V8 gm engines should have 60-66 fuel pressure. Cold start should be 64-65 lbs of pressure. If you do not have full fuel pressure on a cold start the injectors will not squirt fuel. Do not leave home without it. Engine running should be 60-66 lbs pressure depending on engine load. Full pressure with return pinched off should be 75-85 or more. And if it has a fast leak down after shut off you have a leak. Post back fuel pressure readings. btmoore1 07-22-2006, 11:49 PM I've never had any problems with it starting at all, it just dies on me. Honestly, I have no idea how to check fuel pressure or what tools I'd need to do it. If it has a leak wouldn't it be leaking gas or something? Is it normal for the pump to make that high pitch noise? You need to check for loss of spark and or fuel pressure when it quits. A high pitched whine could be stopped up fuel filter or wak pump or just insulater bad in tank. A fuel pressure check will point out a bad fuel pump. You will need a fuel pressure gauge to check fuel pressure. Post back pressure readings . btmoore1 07-23-2006, 12:01 AM What is a WAK pump? I changed the fuel filter this morning and it drove fine all day until about 6 this afternoon and it stall on me again. Could there be trash in the lines or tak that would make the filter stop up that quickly? btmoore1 07-23-2006, 12:01 AM sorry tank MT-2500 07-23-2006, 10:48 AM What is a WAK pump? I changed the fuel filter this morning and it drove fine all day until about 6 this afternoon and it stall on me again. Could there be trash in the lines or tak that would make the filter stop up that quickly? Well you old key board is doing like mine. tak sould be tank and WAK should be bad. :grinyes:   If you suspect trash in tank recheck the fuel filter you just put on. Pull it off and see if yiu can blow threw it. How was the old filter you took off? If the filters are stopped up I always like to cut the old filters open and see what is in there. Whining can be bad pump or bad fuel tank mounting on the fuel pump. They are mounted in rubber to quiet them down. Also whining can be a overloaded fuel pump like fuel filter stopping up or pickup sock stopped up. Check the filter again and run the fuel pressure test I outlined. Also when it stalls check for lose of fuel or spark or both. MT Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
