Got a 1998 CAMRY V6

The car has 118,000 miles on it and wanted to know which oil would you recommend for my next oil change. I do all the oil changes at home by the way. Just wanted to know which oil would be best.

You should definitely use synthetic like Mobil1 or Castrol Syntec (5W30). If you use a petroleum-based oil, make sure you change it frequently because your engine is prone to form sludge under conditions that stress the oil.

See the first post in the FAQ thread.

Cool Re: Got a 1998 CAMRY V6

After watching years of oil anylisis.
Mobil1 anything will outpreform any equivilant oil, besides AMSoil, which is only argueably better.

Short of Mobil1, there are other oils that also preform well.
Toyota brand oil (Which is brought to us by ExxonMobil - Mexico)
Wallmart's Super-Tech (Which is also ExxonMobil - Mexico)
Being ExxonMobil explains why they also turn in great anylisis.

Flush the engine, run Mobil1 synthetic 5w-30 from Wallmart. $18 bucks buys a 5 quart jug. Use a Toyota filter, Denso First Time fit filter, or a Purolator.
If you can swing $25 bucks, Mobil1 synthetic EP.
With a synthetic, change the oil about once a year, every 10-12,000 miles or so.
Otherwise the 5,000 miles for any descent dino is good. Most descent dino oils pull out to 7000-8000 miles befor the UAO's (The addative package) & oil weight tank.
If it's a premium dino, the older toyota schedule of 7500 miles is OK.

But that's just a general rule of thumb. If it's not synthetic, change it at 5,000 miles. 7,500 miles if it's a top end non-synthetic. 10,000 miles if it's synthetic. If you ever get curious, want to know how your engine is doing, or know the real answer to "how long should I go between oil changes". Spend $20-30 on an oil anylisys kit & get the answer.
