You just have to wedge a prybar in behind the inner CV joint, then pry it out. It'll come out with a bit of a snap, as there's a retaining ring (or whatever the proper name of it is) that's holding it in place.

Re: 97 Cav Axel Change

i figured as much, not worried about the axel its getting replaced as you can see the old one popped and the axel greese is all over the place, but the new one didnt come with a new retaining ring so i wanted to try to salvage it if i could.

the axel puller im using uses pretty much the same philosophy as prying it does, just screws on and fastens using the hub nut and pulls with a slide hammer but its not... pulling.

New shafts usually don't come with the new clips. When you remove that one if its an auto be prepared for some fluid to come rushing out after you take the shaft off. There is going to be a section of the old shaft your going to have to remove from that one and put onto the new one. The 2 new shafts should be identical for the most part, but on the passenger side you'll see what you need to swap over. The driver side is completely sealed and no fluid should come out. Just be careful around the seal on the passenger side as any slit or tear and you'll need new ones of those aswell. This is what i had to do with my 99 auto 4 speed. The auto 3 speeds should be the same.
