HVAC Fan blower

2003 Grand Prix GT, same problem as what seems to be thousands with the BMR problem (fan speeds 1-4 not working and 5 only working). Well setting 5 finally quit on me so I read the great tips on the forum and finally replaced the BMR. In doing so I had a short as the exposed ends of the 5 cable came in contact with the glove box metal frame. Checked all the fuses everything seems ok but the fan does not work. Any idea what the problem might be? Fan motor?, switch? How does one check these out? Or is there a fuse that I am missing?

There are a few fuses related to the HVAC system. There should be one for the climate control head unit and blower hi-speed so check them out. Maybe the blower motor was damaged or went bad. You can bench test the blower motor by applying a fused 12 volts to the input pin at the connector. Also, you'll need to apply a ground to the ground pin. See if the blower spins.

Also, since there may have been a short related to the wiring it is possible the new blower motor resistor is bad now.

Thanks for the insight. I tested the switch first without the blower motor resistor(BMR) and everything checked out and checked the switch with BMR in line and everything checked good without it hooked up to the motor. I found the problem was the motor as it did not spin when applying a voltage. Looks like the problem was due to water intrusion coming from the black rubber hose which looks like a cooling hose for the bottom part of the motor coil. The bottom of the motor was all rusted up which was another sign of water was there and I do believe that the water was probably coming from a recent windshield replacement.

The water could also be coming from a leaky cowl seal, common problem on our cars.

You'll have to remove the passenger side wiper arm, and then the plastic piece underneath of it. bnaylor I believe has repair instructions for this, or do a forum search under "water on passenger side floor"

The hose is actually a drain hose for water that may accumulate.

Thank you very much to the both of you. If it wasn't a forum like this and you guys, GM and other Car manufacturers would be making a killing on us. It seems this particular problem has been around for a lot of years and GM has never done anything about it. No wonder more and more people are switching to foreign cars.

Same problem. 2003 Grand Prix GT. Fan doesn't work at all. Everything else seems fine but once in a while the passenger window control from the drivers console doesn't work. I just want the fan to work. I've read here that there could be multiple reasons. I'm not familiar with how to even GET to the blower motor. Any instructions on how to get to it, change the resistor etc. would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to fix this one myself but I'm a little clueless at this point.

I have a dual climate with a manual HVAC system. I'm not sure if it has a resistor or module. How/what is the best way to find out. If it has the module, how would I check it to see if it's that or maybe just the switch. The link was GREAT!! Lot's of great info and pics. Does the dual climate/manual system look the same? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help.

You're welcome. The manual dual climate uses the blower motor resistor (BMR) so the procedure is applicable and the same. On the BMR if you are missing speeds 1 - 4 then it is the most likely cause. If you have positions 1 - 4 but missing 5 (hi-speed) then it is the cause or a blown hi-speed fuse. If no speeds are present then it is the blower motor or some 12 volt problem. Good luck!
