V-tec ?

I know this may sound like a really dumb question, but please take it easy, im new to honda/acuras...What exactly is V-tec, Im always hearing peolpe say their v-tec kicks on hard and some talk about v-tec controllers, etc. Could someone please explain to me what exactly V-tec is. Thank you very much
