Question My van sucks!!

1992 GMC Safari. Well I just bought this POS about 5 days ago for 400.00. everything looked good. 4th of july it overheated on the highway. it was very hot. temp gage was all the way up. anyway about an hour to 2 hours later is started fine and we drove it to car X. it couldnt get over 40 mph. it seemed like it was in limp mode. they have no clue why it overheated. needs new altanator. but other then that they have no clue. everything that would normaly make a car overheat, was fine. so anybody have any ideas???? i am ready to blow this POS up.
