1989 tpi 5.7 timming,how to?

hey guys, i took the heads off my tpi 89 5.7 to do a valve job. and now that im putting it back together i cant get the timming down! it just cranks.i have been moving the distributor around and no luck.what am i missing?dose anyone know how to do it properly?thanks in advance.

Did you make note of the distributers orientation before you took apart?

Put no. 1 piston up to the top. piont the rotor at no. 1 cyl and call that position No.1 then place all the leads on the cap in the correct firing order from No.1 position. This should roughly time you engine enough to allow it to run sweet enough to do a fine tune with a timing light latter.
