Corolla Twin Cam - HELP

Heya there Corolla Forum!
Just looking for a bit of advice. I'm 18 (in 2 weeks) and looking to buy my first car in Dec/Jan. I want a late 80's Twin Cam Corolla. I'm located in Sydney, Australia if it helps. The problem is, I don't know what to look for when I'm looking at the cars! What usually goes first on a 4A-GE? How easy are engine transplants? And finally, what are the most cost-to-power effective mods? Filter, Extractors, Exhaust...EMS??

oh yeah its probably not a good idea to turbpo one of these. Not because it will damage the car but these arent really straight away cars. The first thing I'd do is make sure it has LSD in it. You can get a full catback for about 450.00 new. As I said before, a motor swap would help more than anything. right away you can scrape out the 20 kilos of tar under the carpet and wrap the header in heat tape. Taking out the back seat will drop another 60 kilos. You can't really get alot of that rice boy sh** for it but doing this stuff will make it alot faster anyway.

what to look for

well most of the rust on these start on the fender trim so look closely at that. the best thing to do is make sure the body is straight and there's no rust. body/frame parts are the hardest thing to get for these cars.

My plans for it were 16" rims with 2" drop, rear swaybar, new bushes, new 20V engine, EMS tuned for 98RON fuel and increase rev limit to about 7700. That's about it. Oh, tuned length extractors, mandrel bent exhaust (2.25") and a mild stereo. That's about it on a student budget. It's just I was wondering if there was any of the parts of the car that are typically problematic - ie. clutch, sump, block, gearbox etc.

well since these cars are primarily used for drifting, you should always check out the gearbox. if you need a clutch www.clutchcityonline sells them new for like 100.00

I think your ideas for your 86 are alot like mine. I'm also dropping in a 20v. If you plan on dragging or street racing this is not the car you want. These cars are setup more for handling and responsiveness. They are in no way built for speed. Even if you have a 20v it won't be faster than alot of cars. If you are planning on street racing try a 4agze. It has alot more torque.
