Subaru steering wheel lock problem

I have an 06 Outback wagon with just over 1,000 miles on it. When I turn the ignition (and engine) off, remove the key and turn the steering wheel to lock it in place, I have to sometimes turn it as much as 480 degrees before it will lock. I called my dealer and he said he never heard of such a problem. He went to the lot and checked another 06 and it locked within inches of where it was when he turned off the engine.
Any thoughts?

Damaged lock - take back and have them fix it.

Re: Subaru steering wheel lock problem

I took it in today. The dealer looked at it. He tested another 06(new) and 05(used) on the lot and they both did the same thing. As it turns out, the local Soubie sales rep was there and didn't do anything about it. The dealer called national Soubie (or so they claim) and national said they never heard of this and no bullitens are out on it. Long story short. They did nothing. Said replacing the lock would only give me a new lock with the same problem. So I guess if the car is ever stolen, my insurance company and Subaru can duke it out.

Re: Subaru steering wheel lock problem

I would get this all in writing so you have documentation covering it.

Re: Subaru steering wheel lock problem

I made sure I left there with the paperwork to show I took it in. In fact, I am giving some thought to taking it to another dealer (without telling them it has already been looked at) for a second opinion.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Subaru steering wheel lock problem

Second opinion sounds like a good plan.

I was thinking about it though.

If the problem is with the lock mechanism, they could replace the whole upper column including the lock mechanism in order to fix it.

Have you contacted SOA yourself about the issue?

Sometimes dealers don't want to take care of things because warranty work is work that ties up their workshop time and they can't bill full customer rate for it, for this reason some dealerships do everything they can not to have to do the work.

Re: Subaru steering wheel lock problem

I was on another forum wondir.com and a guy posted me said this was normal, the lock would kick in if some one tried to steal the car.
