1971 Dodge Dart 318ci?magnum3456 06-27-2006, 10:34 PM my friend has a dart and apparently it wont start...they out in a new fuel filter and pump and still wont...when they put a lil gas directly in the carb...itll run for a few secs...any ideas? KManiac 06-28-2006, 11:33 AM There is one of three possible problems. Either the fuel pick up in the tank is plugged with debris or the needle valve in the carburetor is stuck shut or the fuel pump push rod (between the cam follower and the fuel pump) is worn too short and needs replacement. Have them try this: Disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor, put an empty can or jar under it and crank the starter a few revolutions. If fuel pumps into the can, the carburetor is the problem and should be rebuilt. If fuel does not pump into the can, then disconnect the suction line at the fuel pump and run a hose from the suction side of the fuel pump to a gas can full of gas. Crank the starter. If you can get the fuel pump to pump gas through, the pick up is plugged. If the new fuel pump still refused to pump fuel even sucking from a gas can, then the actuator rod needs replacement. Remove the fuel pump, pull out the actuator rod and replace. Let us know what you friend discovers. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
