02-06 Camry remote start add-on for existing keyless entrydanik50 06-27-2006, 08:19 PM I heard from a guy at a sound shop that there is a system that will add-on to the already existing keyless entry/trunk opener system that will allow me to remote start the car. Apparently, the system is an add on without a separate remote (which is a big plus to me) Instead, the unlock button on the existing Toyota keyless entry remote will have to be pressed twice. At this point the doors will unlock and the engine will begin to idle for the next 12 minutes. The negatives of this remote start system are the distance, the remotte start will only work from a short distance (like a house window, and the car is in the driveway), and the doors will remain unlocked as long as the car is idling without the keys in it. To me these negatives are not a big deal, i would like to know what is this add-on and how hard is it to install one like it. and where it can be bought. If anyone can offer some ideas or knows something, i will appreciate the info, becasue come winter, I don't want to be getting into a cold car and having to sit in it to wait for it to warm-up if i don't have to! I'm sure that everyone here would like to know too. so thanks in advance. A good one (made by DEI), will only run you a couple of hundred dollars installed, and it'll do keyless entry, trunk release, flash the parking lights...the whole nine yards. And it's well worth the extra money to spend to get the "all inclusive" unit. Been working with these systems for about 9 years now, and I've *yet* to see an "add-on" work correctly with any sort of existing unit. Usually, you end up with more issues than convenience. ponchonutty 07-02-2006, 10:36 AM To be completely honest....save your money and get the full function version of the remote start system. I 2nd that. I use to sell ad on remote starters and they just plain work funky. Usually I try to install them on the lock that way it'll stay locked. Sometimes you can't do that because the OEM keyless shuts off when the car is running. The other complaint is if you press the lock/unlock buttons too many times inside the car, it'll activate the remote start. Personally, there's only about $50 or so difference in price from an ad on piece to a self contained unit. Besides, what good is of having a remote start if you have to be with in 15-50 feet to get it to work. If you are that close, might as well just save your money and use your keys. I'd look into www.directed.com or even better, www.compustar.org and get a nice one. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
