engine check light
Hello to all,
While driving my "engine check light" came on and dissappeared in about 10 minutes. Does anybody know or have a reason why it came on intermittenly?
Is their any thing I need to check or worry about?  I have an 89' Camry

Often that intermittent is caused by a failing O2 sensor. Can you pull any computer codes? Normally the light will set a code.

DFBonnett,
If the 02 sensors going then my next visit I might just have Toyota change it. Computer codes? I don't think I can cuz it hasn't gone on since then. 
This is my moms car and I'm on a tight budget since she passed away last October. Besides here in California it saves me allot of gas and I can't just get rid of it.  It's in good working order although I must admit it does consume oil at little.
The Camry's ready for a service towards the end of the year so the 02 sensor will be looked at then. Thanks for the quick reply.

If the light came on then the code will be stored in the computer since a 2002 is OBD2. You can take the car to Autozone and they will read the code for you for free. Why guess?

No, the '89 camry will not be OBDII compliant. I don't know how to read the codes from an '89 camry. Usually on cars that age, there is a jumper connection you can make, which will make the check engine light "blink" the code. My '85 celica does this. Maybe someone else in the forum could tell you how to check the code for your specific year.

Sorry, abrittis is correct. The 89 Camry will be OBD1, not OBD2. I dont know why I was thinking you have a 2002. On the positive side, it does mean you can read the codes yourself with a jumper wire. It used to be connect "T" and "E1", inside the diagnostic connector on my generation 1, and then turn the key to the on position (not start position). Then count the number of flashes of the check engine light. But since you will need a manual to read the flashes, it's best to check the manual before trying anything.

No problem dude :-) Besides I don't have a portable diagnostor anyway. Since then and even now it hasn't come on so fir the time being I'm not gonna worry about.
