How can you troubleshoot compressor problems,when the a/c is turned on everything seems to work but the compressor never turns on.

might need a new compressor, try a used 1 from a junk yard

might be low on refrigerant (sp?). I do believe that there is a cut-off switch in the system if the pressure gets too low.
