Anyone have any informed opinions on good quality OBDI/OBDII/CAN code readers that are good buys for the money? I don't want to pay more than $400. Hooking up to a PC is good, but not necessary.

I have a recommendation for AutoXRay 6000. Any opinions about others? Is this a good buy, considering it has the PC software for graphing, etc. which I might use?

If you have a palm or windows Handheld device, I use Auterra DynoScan for Palm and I am quite happy with it. They offer free upgrades for their software as it is released. I think they just released a PC version of their product as well.

How do these devices communicate with a Palm device?

When you order it you tell them what type of palm device you have. It comes in 3 pieces. Two wires, and a small "converter box". One wire connects the box to the OBD connector on your car. The other wire connects the box to your palm device. It connects to the palm device via the same connectors used for hot-sync.

In case you upgrade your palm in the future, they also just sell the wires that connect the palm to the "box" for a small charge.

Take a look at a tool called AutoTap at www.autotap.com it is a PC/palm based scanner that has alot of features like graphing and logging.

The autotap is apparently only for Ford, GM, and Chrysler. I need japanese also.

Palmer Performance PCMScan. It takes a laptop & a serial cable(you can use serial to usb), but is actually a full fledged, real time logger - where the other things so far listed are not.

Behind that is something like the Auterra's. Which are really nice, but you can't display much at one time.

The ability to both view a ton of graphs, and log them in real time can not be understated. When you really hit a big problem, it's like the night & day difference between shorting the old TE1 & E1 to ge the CEL to flash, and actually using the $6000 vetronix toyota obd-I scanner.

The AutoTap does works on Japanese cars as well. I have used it on all makes you just have to purchase the right software bundle. For only about $250 CDN I think its good value for the money.
