95 safari 4.3 automatic trans
takes off ok but when It shifts into second gear
@ abaut 18 miles hour feels like trans winds up then gives
a big jump any help please thanks Sal.
first thing to do is check the transmission fluid level with the engine warmed up and the running. what you describe indicates a slow pressure build in the transmission. I believe the '95 has the 4L60E transmission. this transmission is similar to my 700R4, but electronically controlled.
Has the transmission fluid and filter ever been changed?

thanks for fast reply Kings.
I bought van with 125.000 miles changed the fluid and filter then
it now has 170.000
Well is the fluid level good?
How does fluid and filter look?
Any check engine lights?
Is the egiune running up to par?
Does it have all 4 forward gears or just 1 and 2?
Have you scanned for codes?

boy you now your stuff ............
I took a peak at the trans fluid and it is low
tomorrow I will pick up a trans filter, and new fluid
and hope that will do the trick thanks will post back with results.
and to back up MT's post.
how does the fluid look? is it red, or brown or..yikes.. black?
siphon some out through the dipstick tube into a glass jar and check it out.
if it's black you have burned clutches or a burned band.

Is it just the photo Blue? or is that band burned?
I toasted my 700R4. What I found was the 1-2 acumulator spring broke, rev'ed it too high and burned the forward clutches. Picked up a few special tools and rebuilt it. Easy..yes. If you can follow directions..really well.
I never dismantled and rebuilt something so complex with so few tools.

I think it must be the photo, and/or the color rendition of the fluorescents I use in the garage (I mix "cool white" and "warm white" lamps to get better overall color spectrum). You're probably seeing the orange/yellow tint of those lamps, since that WAS a new band going into that trans. That was 20,200 miles ago, and it's still doing fine.
