Dead Transmission!
Anyone out there have a code P0740 come up on their transmission? I did last week. Honda says bad transmission and it'll only cost me $5100 clams to get it fixed!
Having been a auto mechanic myself for many years - I smell a rat. Anybody else have this problem?

98 & newer honda automatic transmission problem. usually it throws indicating a bad shift solenoid or linear solenoid. these parts can be changed but will NOT permantely fix the transmission. Accords & odyssey's are the car infected. honda is talking about extending the warranty on the transmission for 7yrs/100K but if you had a go out trans before this happens you will NOT recieve any assistance form Honda. Mileage does not seem to have a factor 500 miles & up they have crapped out. . . .

Rich I am having same exact problem with my v6 accord. P0740 Honda recently extended warranty on 00-02 cars, but declined mine. Please let me know what you were able to do, mine is still driveable, and with cold weather it is not misbehaving as much. Did yours died on you or is just shifting bad? I have had all transmission fluid changed every 20k with Honda fluid religiously. I understand that these cars do not have transmission coolers, and also their filters are built in so they are not replaceable. I am thinking may be heat kills them, what do you think since you are a mechanic. any reply will be greatly appreciated. paulamina@yahoo.com

Why did Honda decline your repair? Try another Honda dealer & bitch you will get your way - they want the customer to come back.

Just a quick story, My buddy had a 2002 Civic EX, and anyways, he spun a bearing, the rear seal came out. Beings it was under warranty, they took it in, and Honda tried to say hell no. They tried to say he was racing the shit out of it, because it had a kit and a wing on it. He called the corporate office and bitched.. They then called him to bring it in, and fixed it. Well while it was there for the 3 weeks instead of the one promised, it recieved a few door dings and a few scratches that were never there. Honda tried to deny it, and tell him that he was SOL. So he called corporate office again, and the very next day one of the BIG DAWGS came down to investigate, he called my buddy up and had him come down to the office. When he got there the guy asked him what he wanted Honda to do for him. My buddy said all that he wanted was for Honda to fix what they screwed up. The guy then asked what my buddy what would he say if he gave him a 2003 Si. My buddy laughed and said that would be kewl. The man then handed him the keys to the only Si on the lot and said have a nice day... Now that sounds like something from a fairy tail, but is the honest Gods truth. No BS. I was like damn, lets see I need to spin one of my bearings, so I could get a new ride ehh!! But the moral of the story, is if you bitch enough, in the best interest of their reputation they most likely will work with you..

Re: Dead Transmission!
Few days ago we had to take our 01 Odyssey to the Honda dealer to replace the transmission for the third time. Like clockwork every 15000 to 20000 miles this car needs a new transmission. Is there anything we all can do to eliminate this annoying problem forever."
We got the car back couple of days ago, but yesterday we faced the same problem of leaky transmission fluid and it came to complete halt. We had to tow it to the dealer. Is it possible that they never changed the transmission?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mahyar

Re: Re: Dead Transmission!
Hopefully the dealer will get it right for you. Like I said before it wasn't uncommon to replace the trans's a few time before the problems was fixed.
If your paper says they repalced it, then they HAD to replace - American Honda looks at every warranty - trans claims mostly! Call American Honda & raise some stink - they will do every thing possible to kiss your ass.
