I've got a '90 Ford Tempo GL that today decided to quit running. I had been running fine but all of a sudden shortly after leaving home, it sputtered and died. When I try to start it, it will start and run for a second then die. Could this be a faulty fuel pump? It has new spark plugs.
I've also noticed that it will run cold (did a burn out on the road) but after it runs a bit....it dies. I've checked the spark and it seems fine....I also removed the feed line to the fuel filter and it seems to pump plenty of fuel ( I can also hear the fuel pump). It will start up every time but only run a second then die.

Any ideas other than "that's what you get for buying a Tempo"?

well crap, you already eliminated what I was going to say.

it might be pouring too much fuel into the mix. at least what it sounds like. You said it runs fine when the engine is cold, but after it warms up it dies. This sounds like it might be running on full choke all the time. If its carburated, check out that, prolly just needs to be cleaned and adjusted. If its fuel injected, i'm not sure how to play with the fuel/air mix with a FI, but im sure someone like texan knows.

A fuel system problem. A friend of mine had the same thing happen to his Mercury, just wait 30-45 mins for the fuel delivery system to cool down and the car should work fine temporarily. Not 100% sure about the fuel pump, but something in the associated system.
