i have a 79 dodge d-100 p/u that is driving me nuts.it won't idle in gear and will stall when you try to come to a stop.it idles ok in park and neutral, but dies when you put it in gear.i have replaced plugs and wires,fuel filter and the carb.it ran ok after i replaced the carb,but went back to stalling pretty soon.i took the egr off and cleaned it and checked it.it seems to be working ok.all the vacuum lines are ok and connected.
i am going to take the carb back and replace it one more time...it's the only thing i can think of that could be wrong.what could be causing this?

What about the points, condenser, distributor cap, rotor, coil, ballast resistor, vaccum leaks other than the lines (i.e.: intake manifold gasket), fuel pump pressure? IF electronic ignition check the ignitor and play in the distributor shaft.

I have a 1986 Mighty Max (Dodge D50) with the 2.6 liter and going through similar problems. I narrowed mine down to the carb and to much play in the distributor shaft which is not good with electronic ignition systems. I doubt a 79 will have electronic ignition though. Play in the shaft doesn't seem to bother point systems nearly as much but still maybe worth looking into. Check for a blown head gastket. Also check for plugged exaust. Thats about all I can think of at the moment.

im not really sure if they had these back then but i had the same exact problem in my 87 z24
it turned out to be the tcc (torque converter clutch selinoid) or something like that. it should be on the bell housing if its an automatic
basically what it does is locks up the torque converter acting kinda like overdrive but like i said im not sure if they used those back then if that is it u can just unplug it but u might use a little more gas and wont have over drive effect or just replace it i just unplugged mine hope this helps
