What about the points, condenser, distributor cap, rotor, coil, ballast resistor, vaccum leaks other than the lines (i.e.: intake manifold gasket), fuel pump pressure? IF electronic ignition check the ignitor and play in the distributor shaft.
I have a 1986 Mighty Max (Dodge D50) with the 2.6 liter and going through similar problems. I narrowed mine down to the carb and to much play in the distributor shaft which is not good with electronic ignition systems. I doubt a 79 will have electronic ignition though. Play in the shaft doesn't seem to bother point systems nearly as much but still maybe worth looking into. Check for a blown head gastket. Also check for plugged exaust. Thats about all I can think of at the moment.
