what kind of things could I do to my engine to make it survive a couple of shots of nitrous. Like is there special pistons or lifters and cam?

You shouldn't have any problems as long as you don't try to go wild with the horsepower. The major problem you may have is with the transmission. If you have the 4t65E-HD transmission you should be able to get away with a 50 HP shot without issues. A lesser transmission may have problems. Just make sure to install in accordance with the manufacturers directions and only hit the button at WOT.
