Exclamation Engine Size and Starter

Okay, my grandafter gave me a kit car, its a 1952 MGTD built on what we think is a 1968 VW chasis. That would mean the engine size is either 1.5 or 1.6 if I'm correct. The car will start cold no problem, but after running it for a while then trying to start it again when the engines hot, the engine won't turn. I think that something inside the starter may be overheating and expanding not letting it turn the engine. If you guys think that is not the problem, let me know. Either way, I need to find out what size engine it is!

Please help, thanks

James

Re: Engine Size and Starter

Engine Serial Number? It will tell you. It is on the block just below the generator stand.

That number would make it a 1969 1500cc engine.

That doesn't guarantee it's a 1500, as it could have been rebuilt to 1600.

As far as the hard start when warmed up, make sure it's the starter binding, and not the engine. When it fails to start, go back and see if you can turn the engine by hand.

If it is the starter, check the easy things first. Make sure all electrical connections are clean and tight. Especially the ground strap from the battery to the frame. If it's corroded, remove it and soak/brush it with a baking soda/water solution to remove the gunk. Wear rubber gloves and goggles.

If it still acts up, a new starter is probably in order.

Re: Engine Size and Starter

To verify the year, check the VIN on the title. If it starts "118" it's a '68. "119" is a '69.

Another way to tell is to look at the torsion bar caps, right in front of the rear wheels. If it's a flush cap, without the tortion bar sticking out, it's a swing axle rear....1968 (or earlier). If the tube sticks out through the cap, it's a IRS rear ....1969 (or later).
