That is without a doubt, the most clever place I've ever seen an amp placed in a car. I'm curious to know exactly how you did that.

Its hard to explain fully how i did it, but basically, workout what size amp rack you need to house the amp(s) and then make it to a design you like, then install it. It far easier to work on it when its not up in the air and upside down.

If you have a look at the other thread, you can see some pics of the amp rack during the making process. I didnt have a camera all the time so i couldnt take loads of pics.

Once you're happy with it, then install the amps into it, line into place using ropes, attach brackets to the rear, cut the roof lining so the brackets can pass thru, wire up all the cables and then fix amp rack into place using the brackets. I would strongly advise you to have a good look above the lining first to see if there are suitable points to fix the brackets to.

I'm auctually tempted to do that with mine... thats really sweet looking, ive never seen anyone put their amps in the ceiling of the car before.

The raw materials didnt cost too much. The main cost was for the 12 volt fans(x4) which work out around $80 and the Blue LEDs (x45) ive installed internally to light it up $90. I then had to get new cables all round $95 but the wood itself was only around $10, go figure. It looks professional due to the way i wanted it to look. Most of my ideas start in my head rather than on paper, and i tend to think of what and how i want it to look and the best way to do it. Sort of picturing it before its done. Hard to explain.

Anyway, still a little finishing off to do to it, i'll take some more pics and post them shortly.

first off, that is a really clean looking install.

one thing though, even though you have those fans there.. the heat fins on the amps are facing upside down so any heat that the amps give off will just rise back up into the amp, even with the fans on.

have you ran into any problems yet?

Im aware of what youre thinking but so far, havent run into any such problems. The amps do have a temperature cut-out, but also have a built in fan which pumps out hot air, which in turn will be ventilated with the external fans. It seems to work no problem, even after a good hard thumping of the system.

Hey P11, sweet set up. How many watts do you got running through your car right now? do you have caps? if yes, where are they?

To be honest, i dont really know how many watts, if the amps are anything to go by, then one of the kenwoods is 4x150w at 4 ohms and the other is bridged to 1x400w (4 ohms) but im running the JL at 3ohms. I suppose its not alot of wattage in total but the trick to the system is the Pheonix Gold Bass Cube mounted it the boot, which makes a hell of a difference to the Sub, easily doubling the SPL.
Ive thought about using a cap but theyre quite expensive here, maybe invest in one later. A nice fancy one with a digital readout.

Hey, what if you gotta work on the amp? Does that plexi come of easily? Did you run the wires right through the headliner? I still can't believe you put the amps on the roof. That's a really smart setup

How is the rack actually attached to the roof? Or are you using cross braces? And does it interfere with the sunroof?

I'll try to answer all the above questions.

Firstly, i think i mentioned earlier in this thread, or in the 'any ideas on system location' thread, how i was goona attach it to the roof, but basically, the sunroof runs along a suspended rail, fixed to the actual roof. I just screwed bracket onto that and the amp rack.

Secondly, the system has previously been in the car for sometime before. I have the same setup and was quite happy with all the speakers and the sound of the system in general. So i just disconnected all the wiring, left all the settings as before, and just relocated it.

The front does come off. Its made of 6mm MDF and had perspex windows for show, but to be honest, there no room to actually do anything, which is why i left the setting as before as i was happy with them.

I had to make a series of cuts around the lining for the brackets and for the wiring to pass thru, the wires then just come down one side of the rear pillars and into behind the side support and bootrim where all the connections were rejoined.

The spec for the whole car is listed on www.primeraweb.co.uk , click onto readers cars, kevins'98 GT. Basically, the headunit controls the whole system with its built in electronic x-overs.

And I'll testify that Kevin has a sweet sounding sound system in that Primera, as I had the pleasure of hearing some tunes through it at the weekend.

Time for my next project.

I casually went into my local audio shop to ask about this new in dash Kenwood DVD Player, and mentioned that if i got one, i would need one of those Kenwood MiniDisc Slave units, the din size ones. Anyway, as it turns out, they had bought a shit load of them, and because they were last years model, they were selling them for £200 instead of thr RRP £400. The reason why i need a MiniDisc, is because all my music is on them due to my current headunit being the KMD-PS971R, a minidisc player.

Without hesitating, i left a deposit for it, and then went home to think about where i could install it. The ideal location would be in the dash, but as there is little space, and without cutting the dash, i had to find somewhere else.

Guess what, i looked at the front courtesy light housing, where the sunroof switch is, and thought to myself, why not just put it there, that way, its also suspended like the rest of my system. So ive set about making a new housing for the slave unit and this is how far ive got in 3 hours.

it still need plenty of shaping, and then covered in black vinyl and finished off with a silver cover like the amp rack.

because ive used the original light fitting, i can secure it up the original way to hold it in place.

Will the light housing be strong enough to hold up a head unit? Cuz I know in a P10, the housing just kinda snaps off. I dunno, maybe the P11 uses screws or soemthing. Do you think you got aenough stuff nailed to the ceiling. haha. Nice work though.

The light fitting does click into place, but there are two screws that hold it up aswell. Anyway, im intending on putting some more in just incase it does decided to hit me on the head:D

Things are starting to take shape now. Ive made the perspex window for it, and finished off rounding up all the corners. Tomorow, i'll get it covered in the vinyl, then ive just gotta wait till i get the extention lead, and plug it in.

Hopefully, it should be done by the end of the week.

All this stuff sounds quite difficult. I wanted to cut through 2 slots in my P10 to make a double DIN slot and put in a monitor. This leaves me the problem w/ the stereo. I can't or at least have never tried to mold fiber glass. Do you have any suggestions? The folding monitors that fit in the single DIN are way too expensive. Thanks

i presume your trying to make some sort of surround for the monitor, then in that case, use MDF (medium density firbreboard) as this can be easily sanded and shaped so it looks like fibre glass. You then need to give it a good coat of primer and then colour it. You can then mount the surround in place using right angle brackets on the rear of if, and onto the inside of the console where youve cut your hole. Aswell, you could then fix a board to it horizontally going into the console to act as a shelf. for your monitor.

I did an install on a mates P10, frist we moved the heater controls in to the glove-box (which was a bit of work, but it can be done) but then we moved them back and took out the top heater vents, and put head unit up the top, then a TV bellow, with the heater controls at the bottom.

p11gt-nice, very nice. that is a very unique system location and your install job makes it look very clean.

grunter-did you put the heater vents back in? that sounds crazy moving the controls to the glove box. the whole set-up sounds crazy, but interesting.

I'd love to put them in the armrest console. I don't even think it could be done w/ major cutting. Why is it there. IT IS SO SMALL!!!!! Nothing even fits in it

No, the last install we did on that car, we put the heater controls back in the centre consol, but left the air vents out.

When we moved the heater controls we went to a wreckers yard and brought the plug and a bit of loom, so we didnt have to cut the factory loom in the car.

The only thing left to do is to light up the perspex window, this time, im gonna use neon flexi strips. The Blue LED's i put surrounding the amps have all went off for some reason, ALL 42 except 3 of them that is. So this time, im gonna get these ones. They come in pairs at 16" long for £25, and i need about 3 sets at a staggering £75 :eek: Is it worth it??? You tell me, i got no money and NO SENSE!!!

Next thing to do, is to get some neon cable to light it all up, including the amp rack again.

Pretty soon, you'll have the friggin steering wheel bolted on to the roof with neon lights all around it, and you'll say, "well, I just wanted an original place for it." What's your next project?

theres no space in there, you wont believe what a good fit it is, as for the GTR badge, the thickness of it has taken the gap between the unit and plexi glass

the EQ is optional, can have it on or off, and also different patterns. Heres a rear view.

You got the eXcelon head unit huh? I'm a big fan of Kenwood. The eXcelon Amps are really expensive though. So wait, does your head unit control the sliding door with the amp cooler? that's phatty boom batty.

i didnt know they were called that (excelon), the model number is a KMD-PS971 mini disc player here in the UK, yep and it does control the power slide doors on the amps. Its really cool, i actually didnt know that when i bought it, but was pleasently supprised by it. Cool feature, must admit. As you can see, i am also a BIG fan of kenwood.

Your whole system musta cost quite a chunk of change. at least you saved on instalation...

Guess what??:D Ive ended up buying another JL and guess what????:D :D Ive built a double box for it. Ive got it here, but my mates got the pics as its his camera. I'll post them up just as soon as hes sent them to me. Also, as the cars in the bodyshop at present, i havent fitted the subs in as yet, but will do just as soon as.... then post up some more pics of the final result.

esco's 20 - as for the price on my install, it was just the raw materials, as i fabricated and installed it myself, but somewhere in the region of £100 UKPounds, half of that was just for all those LED's:D
