Question 396 In a Caprice?

Recently I bought an 87 305 cid Caprice for $30, all it needed was a transmision. Once I took the old tranny out, I was thinking for $30 this would be a good project car. I have a 396 out of a wrecked Chevelle. Would the 396 fit into the Caprice and bolt to the thm700r4. If it would go into the Caprice with that tranny, what other sort of problems should I expect?

Thanks for any help.

aha sweet idea.

Yes a 396 Big Block will bolt up to a 700R4 with no problem. All you may have to is fabricate/buy new motor mounts.

I garuantee nothing. But i wish you the best of luck!

You'll definately have torque problems. If you aren't planning on changing the rear end, i wouldn't proceed.

Re: 396 In a Caprice?

You absolutely do not have to buy or fabricate any mounts, everything bolts up !!!! DO IT !!!! My 79 caprice aerocoupe has a mild 468 big block, 700r4, and im installing the posi and 4.10 gears outta my 77 aerocoupe when the weather brakes here in chicago.

The 700 can be a great tranny if built well, can be a giant POS if built badly.

A 396 might make less torque than a stock LT1, unless it is a wild engine you should have no problem getting a 700 to live behind it.
