I have a white Cougar XR-7 that has been having lots of problems lately with the fuel delivery system (i think), and twice the auto shop has been little to no help. When the car is sitting at red light, the engine doesn't seem to get a rich enough fuel-air mixture. The oil gage bounces real low and if I don't blip the gas pedal occasionally, the engine stalls out. I am inclined to think that something must be wrong with either the injectors or the fuel pump, although it may be a back pressure issue. I'm also not rulely out a possible problem with the transmission because in regular driving, the timing on the shifts (particularly down) goes screwy. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should check out/fix?

Is that the 3.8L or 4.6L?

I know with the 4.6's you have to periodically clean the Mass air flow sensor (MAF). Cleaning that unit may help you. Check your wires for any damage. When was the last time you changed your plugs? What kind of plugs are you running (platinum, copper, etc.)?

Also, the oil guage isn't really a guage - it is merely an on/off switch. It does not register any change (except drastic such as total loss of fluid) in pressure. But, what you have said about it bobbing back and forth is intriguing.

Last of all, and I mean it - don't be chicken about asking these guys: Ask again on www.crownvic.org , as there are many brilliant minds about these kinds of cars. There are a few of us who actually own an MN12 besides our Vics/Monkeys :)!

Good luck - Merc.

You'd probably be better off asking the Thunderbird and Cougar guys :)
