Upper or lower ball joint?

Does any one know anthing about a upper or lower ball joint? Or how to fixthe upper or lower ball joint on a 95 Nissan Pathfinder. When I reverse and turn the wheel I hear a sort of clunking a thump most accures when reversing but will alos ocassionally will sound when in drive. Any help would be appreciated.

check ball joints FIRST by jacking up the suspension LOADED. that is, jack up each side of the vehicle by the lower control arm as close to the lower ball joint as possible..... then FIRST, push in on the TOP of the tire....if you feel movement or a "clunk" then you probably need upper ball joints.....THEN, stick a prybar between the lower control arm surface and the edge of the steering knuckle just inboard of the lower ball joint stud and lightly pry upwards....if the movement is more than about a 1/16 inch or so then you probably need lowers also.......if your pathfinder is an R50 model, eliminate the step referring to the upper ball joint
