For a possible cheap and easy fix, replace the check valve at the power booster. That is a great place to lose vacuum, also trace the hose to the intake manifold to make sure it isn't split from age.
Power boosters don't go bad that often, but I do see some fail if the car sits around unused for long periods of time. The check for that is: With the car off, pump the brake pedal to get all the vacuum out of the booster. With your foot on the brake, start the engine up. If the booster is good the pedal will sink noticeably. I kind of doubt if yours is bad, you would have mentioned the rock hard pedal that goes with a bad booster.
