under the hood today i found out that i have a clifford alarm in my 98 taurus. are these a dealer option or was it definatly aftermarket? i was going to buy an alarm, because i don't have my ford remote anymore, and am having trouble programming new remotes to my car. i'm hoping someone can tell me if the clifford is standard or aftermarket, and hopefully i can jsut get a remote for that and be able to use it and my keyless entry. also, does anyone know where to find the model number of a clifford alarm? i can't seem to find the module anywhere just the horn. thanks for any help!

Clifford alarms are not standard, must be an aftermarket. The module should be installed inside the car, probably behind the radio or underneath the console.

The module for the keyless entry is mounted above the brake and accelerator pedal, so I would expect that the Clifford module is somewhere near that area. There should be a sticker with the model number or a number molded into the case of the module.

You might find that you can get a similar aftermarket alarm system for less than two replacement remotes will cost you.

Is there an LED mounted in the cabin of the car, that does not appear to belong? If so, you should be able to find the wiring for the LED and follow it back to the alarm module.

There's a definite procedure to program your remotes, are you talking about the factory ones????

thank you. i spent some time digging sround and found my module...i didn't see anything that didn't look factory underneath the dash near the fuses, but i looked closer and followed the LED wire and the antennae and found the module. it was basically begind my left AC/fan/heat port. hidden pretty well...bad if your trying to find it, good if your trying to keep a theif from finding it i suppose. a couple screws to get the gauge cover out is all it too to access it once i found it....it's a matrix 1 system. now all i need is a remote, which goes for around 40$ on ebay new. do i need anything special to program it to my module? i wrote down the number oin the module, which is the serial i'm guessing so i wouldn't have to dig it back out.

Often times the procedure to program new or additional remotes to an aftermarket alarm involves the valet switch, ignition switch, possibly opening the hood, and of course all remotes to be programmed. You may want to verify with the seller on eBay that the new remote comes with programming instructions.

You may be able to find a PDF of the owner's manual for your system for download too. Try a Google search.
