Unhappy 2004 grand prix gt

I am a female, not car savvy, but when I turn the ignition on the car and it is cold, it will misfire...that is it will start and die down right after turning the key...what does that mean. I just got stuck with this car. the dealer said to tap the gas to get it started after the initial start up, now this works...the car contiunes to run...but my question is you shouldn't have to tap the gas on a fuel injected engine. I have a v6, 3.8 lt engine. can someone help me...figure out whats wrong. I only have two days to return this car..but I love it already. always wanted a grand prix.

Re: 2004 grand prix gt

I would have the fuel pressure checked...maybe it's a bad fuel pump.

Re: 2004 grand prix gt

Welcome to AF!!

It is not normal for a car to die like this on the first try. I assume that the dealer gave you some form of drive train warranty with this vehicle? If so tell him you want him to find out why the car will not start on the first try. Second, check the air filter to see if it is clean. I once had a Ford Taurus that when the air filter got dirty the car would start and then stall on the first try. Started every time on the second try. Replaced the filter and the car ran like a champ.

The issue here concerns fuel pressure. As bricker82 stated make sure they check it. Your problem sounds like the fuel pressure regulator is not holding enough pressure to allow the car to start on the first try. They can check it for you very easily. The key is to make sure they check it when the car is cold and has been sitting for at least 8 hours. If not they will not get a true reading based on your symptoms.

If the pressure is too low then the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump will need to be replaced. It should be covered under the warranty as this relates to the engine and drivetrain. If they say no then you need to find a good attorney because you have been suckered into a deal and given a warranty that the dealer has no intention of honoring.

Good Luck!!

Re: 2004 grand prix gt

thankyou bricker 82 and gtpdad for replying...I will make sure that I call them today and ask them to look at that...I took the car back to them yesterday and they are suppose to be working on it today...so hopefully, they will be honest and hold up to their end of the warranty.
