96 dash repair

around almost the entire top of my instrument cluster the grey vynil? dash material(which appears to have some kind of foam backing) has separated from the hard plasic of the cluster. I have an idea of how to get it to go together but I'm not sure what kind of adhesive to use. I need a decent curing period so I have time to clamp it properly but I also need no mess and a permanant bond. any ideas???

Re: 96 dash repair

I used Gorilla Glue (sparingly) with about 6 Quick Clamps and a bunch of newspaper to catch any Gorilla Glue that didn't stay where I intended it. That was last summer and it's still holding. Be sure you keep the clamps positioned evenly.

In case you haven't used Gorilla Glue before, I should mention that a little goes a long way. This stuff foams up quite a bit and runs, so use it sparingly. If you get excess foaming, you can trim it with an X-acto knife, but if you get any in your carpet, on the plastic, or on the floormats, it will not be fun to clean up.

Interestingly enough,I also had the same problem with my 96 Taurus G. I also thought of the same remedy, but never got around to trying it. I will now!

Re: 96 dash repair

I haven't used gorilla glue befor ebut planned on using blue painters tape to prevent any spillage i was also going to use a piece of luann its kind of like plywood as a brace for the clamps to spread out the pressure. thanks

Re: 96 dash repair

Thanks Rod, I had just been using 3M tape but it had to be replaced about every two weeks. I will try the gorilla glue the next day it is below 90 and let you know how it works out for me.
