Air Conditioning retrofit kit on 1990 351 efi enginemiwise 04-09-2006, 09:29 PM Hi, Some of you may remember me, I posted about a transmission problem a while back. . .just got that fixed at a local tranny shop at about an 800 dollar repair bill, so I wanted to try to fix everything else myself. I'm still just trying to square away some things with my vehicle before summer gets here (in Louisiana, and it gets very hot here). I have a Ford Van with a 351 EFI engine. The a/c compressor is making a buzzing noise (sounds like an airplane taking off when rev engine). I put an r134a retrofit kit onto it to charge it back up and found out the low pressure switch wasn't working (compressor kicks on when I unplug it and ground out the wire). The compressor is very loud and I'm afraid that if I try to use it it will burn up. Is the 134a causing this to happen, or do you think the compressor is bad and I need to replace it? Thanks for any help!! horse482 04-10-2006, 07:50 PM did you use the oil that came with the retro kit and evac the system? I have never heard of a 134a retro kit wiping out a compressor. The compressor was probably on it way out any way. miwise 04-10-2006, 10:49 PM I used the oil that came with it, but some may have not gone in. The system was not evacuated b/c it had no pressure (all had leaked out anyways). I may just have to take it to a specialist I guess. Just trying to save some bucks.
