I have a 1987 735i that will turn over but wont start. It was in the shop for 1 month while they "traced the electrical problem" which they determined to be the crank sensor. This car has a new crank sensor, new starter, new battery, new spark plug wires, new spark plugs, new distributor cap, new rotor button, new fuel pump, new air filter....I am at my wits end. I want to get this last problem resolved so I can sell it. I have added a beautiful paint job, new bmw wheels, and new tires. After I got the crank sensor, it did start for a short time, but now it is back to turning over but not starting! Please help!

I got one thing you can try, either test your mass air flow sensor by checking for continuity or unplug it, get inside the vehicle, start it while pressing the gas pedal to the floor. If it starts you have a bad mass air flow sensor most likely.

Does the shop think it is a ignition or fuel problem? Is it getting spark when it doesnt start? Does it have fuel pressure when it cranks? Check the basics so you know what avenue to explore.

I have had the same trouble with my E 23 and found that I had a fuel delivery problem, either a clogged fuel filter after a tank repair or something else in the fuel delivery line. But so far mine has been flawless.

may have a ground wire off the body broke, off,or loose those on the front of the passenger motor mount will stop them from cranking thats a fact but check all body grounds in case.

My '89 735 sometimes has the same problem. No problem in starting it from cold starts, but if I restart it after having used and turned off ignition after 15 minutes, it will have a hard time starting. It cranks and all, but does not catch on. I have not found the solution yet, but I have a feeling that its either the fuel delivery or ignition coil.

there is two temperature sensors on top of thermostat housing, clean the contacts of these and it should cure your problem
