96 lumina stumbles on acceleration

i have a 96 chevy lumina and the engine is starting to stumble when you accelerate or it is idiling it doesn't do it every day just a couple of times a week some days it runs great. the engine light came on so i had the code read and it said misfire on multiple cylinders, i changed the plugs and wires and it hasn't stopped, so now where do i go from here is it the module and coils, the fuel filter, ignition switch, or the computer. how can i better diagnous the problem, all the parts are expensive i would hate to have to spend the money on a module or ignition switch to find out that its not the problem. HELP!!!

Re: 96 lumina stumbles on acceleration

I had the same reading and mine also said that the cam sensor was reporting this.. so i changed the plugs and wires and that seemed to help the problem of my car dieing... I also went ahead and changed the cam sensor (relatively cheap) because went i went to take it out so i could take it to autozone to have it tested, i found that it had gotten hot at some point because it had a few spots where it had melted on the top, near where the wires hook to it.. so maybe you can check on the cam sensor ?

Change the fuel filter first, as it is a regular maintenance item and not very expensive. Also, put some good fuel system cleaner in the tank. If it doesn't clear up, you can have the ignition module tested at Zone or Advance for free to eliminate it. If it tests ok, then you may have some injectors going bad, which is a fairly common problem on these cars. Are you losing coolant? The intake gaskets are a MAJOR issue on these cars, and will cause a vacuum leak that will make it stumble. They fail at the coolant passage on the ends, and normally you'll see coolant seepage at the failure points.

Re: 96 lumina stumbles on acceleration

i will try the fuel filter that was going to be my first option, when i first bought the car the check engine light kept comming on and every time i had it read it said missfire on cylinder one and then it said misfire on cylinder three and now it say misfire on multiple cylinders, im not leaking any coolant the intake gasket was changed about 2 years ago the engine is real clean no oil or coolant leaking, even after the intake gasket was changed i pulled out of the shop and not more than 2 miles down the road the check engine light came back on and t6he code was misfire on cylinder one. ill try the fuel filter and keep you posted until i get the problem resolved, what is your opinion on the cam sensor?
