I have a 72 bug which drives around fine then all of a sudden stops dead. After this happens a pour a bit of gas into the top of the carb and the engine starts again and runs fine again for a few miles. this keeps happening could someone please help.

Well your not getting enough fuel, you didn't say if it dies when your driving or when idling but could be one or more of several problems:
In order of what I would do:
crud in the fuel line/filter,carb. blow them out or replace. (Carb need rebuild?), remove float valve & clean
mixture too lean on carb needs adjustment
fuel pump plugged/ bad
fuel tank outlet is plugged, check your getting gas out of the tank and enough gas.

Thankyou for your reply. I think it is sorted now as i did what you said and found quite a builup of muck in the float chamber. Seems ok now.

The carb may need rebuilt, hole in the fuel line, bad fuel line, there are several possibilities
