2001 PP traction ctrl

I am not as familiar with the impalas as I am with the Vics but my question is in regards to the traction ctrl. If a vehicle does not have the switch on the dash for it but the car does govern wheel spin can the switch be added to turn it on & off? Is it even realistically possible? thank you

Re: 2001 PP traction ctrl

I take it you dont have ABS either do you? They come together

If your car doesnt have trac cntl or ABS, it doesnt limit wheel speed.

In order for you to add trac/ABS you would have to get 4 new hubs, because the wheel speed sensor, that controls the trac/ABS, is built into the hub, then you would have to do aa lot of PCM re-programmings and then mounting of a switch, plus you would have to get a different EBCM (electronic brake control module) to also control the ABS.

So is it possible, yes. Is it realistic, no.

Re: 2001 PP traction ctrl

I guess you now have me questioning whether I have ABS or not. But I believe I remember the patented clicking when braking which tells me I must.

We get snow here and you are limited in how much forward spin you can have when accelerating on slippery surfaces which seems like a governor of sorts which prompted me to ask can this be shut off. I actually have a stock traction ctrl switch. Guess I really wanted to know if the wiring might be there or if it can be installed to work.

Re: 2001 PP traction ctrl

hmm, tell you what. Go open your trunk, look on the lid, there will be a sticker with a ton of numbers and letters (3 of them...ie : NX5) go look at that sticker and tell me if you have NW7 or NW9. Those appear to be the only 2 codes for traction control. If you have either of those, then you have traction control. If you do, you can just hit that trac off button on the dash and a light should appear on your gauge cluster that says "trac off" then you can spin your tires all you want.

otherwise ill have to look into if the wiring is gonig to be there already or not. do you happen to have a picture of your dash?

Re: 2001 PP traction ctrl

I see an NK5. I'll get you a pic of the dash but my guess is that it will look pretty much identical to yours. I put the trac ctrl button in the dash but didn't look real hard for any wiring to plug into it. So is it a traction contrl that limits you from free spinning the wheels? I appreciate all your help.

Re: 2001 PP traction ctrl

nope, sorry, but NK5 is the standard steering wheel code.

I talked with someone last night and asked them some questions for you, and they knew something I didnt.

apparently, the PCM has a torque limiter type thng (i forgot what he called it) and that is most likey what you felt "govern" your wheel speed. If the trac button didnt come with your car, it is most likey that you dont have it, and pretty much cant put it in. without a LOT of work. And the person I talked to, didnt know if all the impalas came with the wiring or not.

But I mean, if you already have the botton there (I take it there was a fake button in its place?) then you could probabaly just dig around and see if you can find a lose connector that will fit on the trac button.

otherthan that, I dont think I can be much more help, sorry.

Re: 2001 PP traction ctrl

there was a fake one there that I replaced the switch with. And no problem because I didn't have much hope anyway but definitely thanks for checking. So I am assuming there is no real way to disengage the pcm then?

Re: 2001 PP traction ctrl

oh no, you cant "shut off" the pcm, its what controls your motor. and unless you know someone that works at a dealership, that knows a lot about the programming in the PCM, you wont be able to disable that torque limiter in the pcm.

so unfortunatly your pretty much out of luck, sorry.

but I could be wrong, I dont know everything, so a stop by a local dealership to ask some questions couldnt hurt.
