I bought some BBK headers a long time ago for my LT-1. I never put them on because I bought a rebuilt engine and I heard the headers might void the warranty. Once the warranty expires I want to put them on. Can I do that in a driveway with jackstands? I've read that those manifold bolts are a real pain. I don't want to get halfway through it and be stuck. I bought this stuff called "Header wrap" that cuts down on heat. I assume you are supposed to wrap the headers with it before you put them on? Also, I heard copper crush gaskets are better than regular header gaskets, opinions please.
Headers are a pain to get on. Its so cramped and such litttle room to work with. If u were gonna do it urself, id recomend a garage with some friends who can help. If this is your only car then i would suggest you dont do it unless u absolutley know whats ur doing. It would suck if ur stuck in a garage sunday night trying to put them in or worse, outside when its raining
Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of because it is my only car. Maybe I'll take it over to the old man's place, he just put on a five-car garage that's just begging to have some firebird parts scattered over the pristine ceramic tile floor. Who the hell puts ceramic tile in a garage?
header wrap helps keep the engine compartment from getting hotter then it already does, and helps keep from melting or burning close wires. it would be a good idea to put a heat sheild on your starter. header wraps most likely will void any warrenty on your headers. there is not a lot of room under there, so i agree that you are going to want to do this job over a weekend. you never know what kind of problems you could run into that can set you back. the rear bolts can sometimes be a pain to get at. It would be easier to use an allen type bolt, and yes the copper gaskets seal better.
