Front Mount INtercooler

Hey guys,
Im new to WRX's..I have 98 WRX and my few mods done to it are:

#BOV
#3'' exhaust and 3'' muffler tip
#Sport Suspension (lowered)
#Custom air box

I am currently boosting 15psi. Thats an average for WRX. If i put i a front mount intercooler, how much psi would i get?

regards,

Re: Front Mount INtercooler

Do you mean how much SHOULD you get? Because just putting on a front mount won't do anything for your boost...the boost is controlled by the wastegate...so yeah.

Generally for a WRX, a front mount is unnecessary unless you're wanting to run heaps of power and boost. If you just get a bigger top mount with a tilt kit and water spray, it will be good to support enough power than most ppl want or need. Also with the top mount the boost lag isn't as bad as with the front mount.

Unless you're planning to run 10s or 11s or build a dedicated track car with $$$ in supporting mods, a front mount will do nothing but detriment your performance. That's my opinion.

Interesting..i forgot to mention that I have a bigger turbo. Standard WRX turbo is VF21; I have a VF23 if that makes any changes. So far with my mods done to the car, im estimating to run 13.4-13.-6 guaranteed.

My aim is to push the boost to minimuum of 18psi and max of 23psi. I know that i would be spending $$$ upgrading the fuel pump, computer, rebuilt gearbox (as standard gearboxes for WRX are weak) so yea...just wanted to know how much more psi i would gain if i put a FMIC

Re: Front Mount INtercooler

Go ahead, boost to 18psi minimum, please let us know how long your stock internals hold out for

Re: Front Mount INtercooler

Yeah listen to Ray. Rexes aren't meant for crazy power without built internals. I'd be pretty happy with your setup. The only reason to get bigger turbos on rexes isn't so much to get crazy boost, but to counter boost taper cos the stock turbos don't have much puff up top. This is for GD rexes by the way, as in the TD04 turbo. I don't know if GC's had diff ones.

But yeah, bigger things on rexes are meant for efficiency..it's not a power toy like the STi. Built up the suspension a bit too and enjoy the windy roads. That's what I like about em.

Re: Front Mount INtercooler

I knew that gearbox cannot handle 18psi without strengthening the internals buddy, so dont be such a smarty pants. Plus, i have no intention of boosting my car without rebuilding the gearbox and the engine parts.
