I believe thier is a seperate sensor for the gauge, The one going to the computer tells the computer the temp and when to turn on the fan. And I think their is a seperate one for the gauge usaully on the back head on the driver side. But ask the dealer thay will tell you. malibugtp 03-26-2006, 02:01 PM if you find out how to fix this let me know since i too replace the sensoron the engine and nothing happened malibugtp 03-29-2006, 09:00 PM wait mine is a 2001 too, mmmmsounds fishy to me igkyoa 03-30-2006, 02:57 PM hey i have a 2001 malibu as well, my temp gauge quit as well and the check engine light came on too, the cause was that my thermostat got stuck open so the coolant was always going through the radiator so the engine temp could not get up to the value where it should be... so i just replaced the thermostat and used my laptop to clear the code and everything has been fine since, so aparently the temp gauge dying is part of your car letting you know that that is ths problem cause it came back when i cleared the code even before i replaced the thermostat lanzagolf 03-30-2006, 09:42 PM hey i have a 2001 malibu as well, my temp gauge quit as well and the check engine light came on too, the cause was that my thermostat got stuck open so the coolant was always going through the radiator so the engine temp could not get up to the value where it should be... so i just replaced the thermostat and used my laptop to clear the code and everything has been fine since, so aparently the temp gauge dying is part of your car letting you know that that is ths problem cause it came back when i cleared the code even before i replaced the thermostat that was next on my list thats what was next on my list, wish i would have got this b4 i ripped the dash apart..just sent malibu qtp an email telling him i heard that that would fix it too..thanks igkyoa 04-02-2006, 11:36 AM the thremostat is kinda a big job on the malibu so i would go somewhere where they can check the trouble codes because if it is the thermostat it will show up as a trouble code something about the temperature not getting high enough or something and that will tell you for sure before you tear stuff appart Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
