Motor swap, What year motor and tranny will fit? 96 blazer

Hey guys, I was considering buying a 1996 4door 4wd blazer with a bad motor and tranny. Tranny went bad and wouldnt shift so he floored for too long and blew the crap out of the motor and now hes selling it. This blazer in really nice shape other than the things that matter most(motor, tranny) I was going to get a used motor and tranny and use this as my first vehicle or just fix to sell. I was also thinking of parting the rig out but I wanted to see how easy parts are for it. I was told 1995 and newer will fit it but how new is new? All the way up until 2006? What would be the best 4.3 to put in it aswell as the tranny. The tranny is(was) an automatic and i was also wondering if i could put a manual in it cheap enough.I have a guy that will sell me his 1995 1500 2wd with the 4.3 in it but is a 5 speed manual. The truck outside is all smashed on the 95 truck so he doesnt want much for it. Also will the internal components off of a older auto trans fit it? I have a near new trans from a 1991 4wd 4 door blazer but was told wasnt going to bolt up so is it possible to just take the internals and swap them from a 91 to the 96? Also does anyone on here have the parts i need for this thing to move? and i would do part swaps like that near new trans for a trans or motor i could use. I live in ny so please anyone that can help please do. Thanks alot, Brian

95 Will not work unless you change the computer as well. Most 95's are OBD1 while 96+ is OBD2 also 95 has a different fuel injection system than a 96+. It would be best to find a 96+ engine.

Thanks alot, This is a big help. Anyone know anything else like the internals of the 1991 tranny going into the(swapping) 96 tranny? Also would a 350 v8 5.7l work, if so with the 96 tranny? And what is the difference from older year(94 and older) not fitting into the truck. Thanks for the help, Brian

The Tranny in the 91 is most likely a 700R4 or 4l60.. The 95 and newer blazers I believe the year is correct, run the 4l60e.. Electronic trans... alot of messing around to get passed the computer for the tranny.... Although my 95 Blazer is a OBDII... The injection on the 96+ are alot better than the 95-. No more "spider" that cracks and leaks and is like $400.00.. USD The SFI is alot better design..... Just my 2 cents though.... My favorite 4.3 of all is the TBI I had in my 91 S-10 Baja..... Tough as nails.... Beat the crap out of that thing and always ran like a top.......

Basically '96 and up for both tranny and engine. To be specific the '96 to '00 tranny should work, and the 4.3 from a '96 up will work too. The '92 to '95 4.3L has different heads, and the intake from a '96+ will not bolt onto it. Changing the electronics to accomidate a '95 or earlier powertrain is a lot harder than just finiding the right engine. You would be basically rewiring/reprogramming the whole truck including the brake (ABS system), which is controlled by the same computer as the powertrain. As for the tranny all earlier versions up to and including '95 were different. The transmission case itself was also changed in '96 too. If you want the least headaches just find a '96-up parts.

To be honest with you, take a look on Ebay Motors. You will find all kinds of stuff, and you'll know approximatly how much your going to be spending. Good luck, and have fun!
