Burning smell?

I have a 95 nissan pathfinder, auto tranny, about 130,000 miles.
I have noticed that it has a burning smell to it when I drive it around. It has been going on for sometime (about a month maybe two), but I have ignored it since there have been no other problems. Everything else works great and it runs well. I am going on a longer trip now though and want to know what's in store for me.
The smell is normal faint, but distinctly smells like rubber burning. I'm afraid that it may be a hose or a wire. All the fluids are filled and maintained regularly. The car drives fine, no hesitations or anything, though occasionally it seems that the power is diminished somewhat, but since I am not the regular driver I'm not certain. What can I do to check for the problem? Does anybody have any advice as to where to start looking?

Re: Burning smell?

get a flashlight, drive it till you start to smell the odor pull over, pop the hood and look and smell around.(if your getting this while driving most likely its in the engine area). look around the exaust manifold (best area for burning)

Re: Burning smell?

Leaking valve covers will let oil drip on the manifolds. Oil burning on the manifolds will smell a lot like burning tires.

Does your floor get hot under/near the gas pedal near the trans hump? Excessively hot? Check for rust holes...
