88 f-150 starting problem

Ok this was my brother in laws truck and he gave up on it and gave it to me.
it is an 88 f-150 with the 4.9. the fuel pump was not running so i took it out and tested it, it ran, put it all back together and ran a jumper to the positive side of the pump so it will come on when key is turned on, I get fuel to the engine but it still will not start, If i pour gas into the intake it will start and run till it runs out of the gas in the intake. any ideas and would a haynes manual be of any use. also is there a way to use a jumper to read the cades if any are stored?
thanks
isie
