Question Door, trunk and ignition lock replacement for 1990 Camry.

Hello,
My girlfriend bought a 1990 camry 4 Cylinder (W/ 90,000 original miles) that has a problem with the lock for the drivers side door and the lock for the trunk. the 1 key that came with the car is the wrong one for these locks, however it works fine for the passengers door lock and the ignition. where can I buy replacment locks for this car so the same key will work with all locks and hopefully the ignition also. is the toyota dealer my only option. the drivers side door lock looks like someone tried to use a screwdriver on it so I don't think it can be saved if it's possible to take it to a locksmith and have the guts replaced in it and all the other locks/ignition, so I can use one key for everything.

as usual, any help/advice is appreciated.

Regards,
JOET/CAMRY

Re: Door, trunk and ignition lock replacement for 1990 Camry.

Several years ago the drivers door lock in my 91 camry got progressively more difficult to open and finally you couldn't operate it with a key anymore. I pulled the cylinder and took it in to a local locksmith. He replaced some of the internal workings and suggested getting a new key made as well. His explanation was that vehicles were once made with locks and keys of approximately the same hardness so like my old chevy truck you could start the vehicle and then remove the key as it had worn so badly, now the key and the lock/ignition are made of metals of dissimilar hardness so one wears faster than the other (in this case the key wears faster) creating increasing amounts of slop in the mating surfaces eventually you are virtually trying to twist the thing in half but the key hasn't pushed the pins in the lock completely up and out of the way so you are actually torquing on the lock assembly/key leading to premature failure of one or both. I've had new keys made every couple of years since and haven't had any trouble. For the few dollars of the cost of a key just consider it a periodic maintenance item to keep you from getting locked out on the night of the 100 year storm....

Hello Jdmetro,

My 1989 Camry had a key that was so worn I could start the car and remove the key from the ignition. I was having trouble with this key on the locks and ignition, but once I had a copy made everything was fine. thanks for responding. take care.

I didn't mean that you should visit him. Send him an e-mail or PM (he's a member of AF) and ask him about your problem.

Update...
I found a 1985 (first generation) camry in the auto salvage yard with the keys still in it. I would like to know if the locks and ignition/lock cylinder would fit and work with a 1990 (second generation) camry? I don't know if toyota changed the design of the locks and ignition/lock cylinder from one generation camry to another. if anyone knows the answer please respond.

any help/advice is appriciated. thank you.

Regards,

JOET/CAMRY
