95 Blazer Start Problem

Recently in my 95 Blazer the ball-bearings on my alternator started to go.. I caught it early before it actually failed, I purchased a alternator from a junk yard and changed it, very simple I changed an alternator before and had no problems. When i was done connecting it i tried to start the car... nothing... it would crank but not start....

I assumed that it was a bad alternator from the junk yard and placed the old one back in the truck just to be sure bacuse it would still start the car... when i was done putting the old one in i went to start it expecting that it would be fine... but nothing ... it would crank but not start...

At this point i have asked many people and cannot find a problem.. i do not have the money to bring it to a repair shop.. and i have hit a dead end... the battery is fine... all the wires were connected back correctly and the belt is on and tight....

Any help would be greatly appriciated! Thank You!!

Re: 95 Blazer Start Problem

Did you see any sparks flying when you changed the alternator or did it short anything out?
Rule of the road is to disconnect the battery before changing the alternator.
Check battery cables.
Check the battery is it low?
Charge it up or try a jumper start.
If the battery dead is the problem charge it up before driving it.
A dead or real, low battery will burn up a alternator trying to charge up a low battery.
Post back how it goes.

Re: 95 Blazer Start Problem

p.s. i guess i forgot to write that part... i disconected the battery during installation and it has enough juice (its a good battery) its still reading at 12 volts.

Ok.. this is now where i stand... i checked the spark plug... it was sparking which certinally narrowed down the problem a bit. I then started thinking about it and went out and bought some ether... while spraying the ether into the air intake i atemptd to start the vehicle (there is 2 people working on this) IT STARTED!! (recharging the battery as well, knowing that it is not a bad alternator) but as soon as we stoped the ether the truck stalled... so should i assume that it is a fuel problem? what type?

Thank You for Your Comments and Help!

Re: 95 Blazer Start Problem

I don't think that a bad alternator should stop the car from running. It should be able to run for a long time on just the battery. What is your battery voltage when the engine was running? If it cranks over then the battery should be good enough to run the engine.

You may have just been unlucky and had a random failure or maybe zapped something with static while reconnecting the battery (a long shot but maybe possible)

I would start checking for fuel problems such as the fuel pump not running. That sounds like your problem now. Don't get side tracked with the alternator issue at this point.

Re: 95 Blazer Start Problem

Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Have you checked your fuel pressure off the line? Have you changed your fuel filter recently? Is your fuel pump priming when you first turn the key in the ignition? You should hear the pump start to whine when it first comes on line for priming.
Let us know what you find.

Re: 95 Blazer Start Problem

it seems as though the fuel pump is not powering on...

i have had suggestions from people that it could be the Fuel Pump Fuse/Relay
besides just the fuel pump being broken itself...

problem is i dont know where to find thses things in my vehicle... if anyone knows what to look for and where it is on my truck it would be greatly appriciated.. thank you for all of your help!!

Re: 95 Blazer Start Problem

check the pump for voltage, check your dash lights when you turn the key,if they dont turn on it almost sounds like an ignition switch possibly. just replaced mine for 100$ and about 2hrs of labor, not too difficult. just another possible problem/solution

Re: 95 Blazer Start Problem

I seem to be having the same problem as you DusterLag. My Blazer just quit on me to. I have done EVERYTHING that you have(sparks are there, ether) with the exception of the Fuel Pump. I can hear mine kick on. I have no idea what to do next. Can't take it to anyone here to do serious troubleshooting for me, because I'm in Korea.(Foreign car thing) Two shops and counting! The only thing they can tell me is that there is nothing wrong with my computer. Any suggestions would be great.

If you have spark and can hear fuel pump kick on the next step is check fuel pressure.
You have to have the proper fuel pressure.
Check fuel pressure and post back pressure readings.
Do no use starting fluid but see if it will it start with carb cleaner sprayed into intake.
It would be better to start a new post and give year and engine and as much other info as you can.
