Hopefully someone can help me with this problem. I just started dating a woman who has this Kia. Her check engine light is on and the vehicle lurches a bit. It will hold idle then just jump up a few hundred rpm. This happens at speed also. It jumps up for a quick second and backs down. Its burning more gas than normal and exhaust also doesn't smell normal to me. I had a few cars that needed an 0/2 sensor when this happened. I have no experience with Kia and was hoping for some information? It has 70000 miles on it and she said she hasn't had a problem before this. If its a sensor will I be able to change it?

If you go to Autozone they will scan the ECM for free and readout the trouble codes. The codes will be formatted PXXXX, where XXXX is a series of numbers.

Get the code and post it here. If there are multiple codes post all of them.
