i was wondering if i could swap out the old 1.7 liter engine for a vw bug engine or any other vw engine they have. im tired of ajusting the valve and having leaks of oil on this thing, i was wondering if i could change it to a vw bus engine or somthing like that i only have 1500.00 bucks for the engine and i will be swaping it out. the only thing i want is for the swap to be strait foward

I'm sure you know this already, but try posting your question to the Pelican Parts Bulletin Board. www.perlicanparts.com I've tried posting a honda swap for my 1.7L there and I got all kinds of responses. They weren't all good but they were something I could build on. They will probably send you to Kennedy engineering for an adapter plate for the tranny and other engine mounts. Good luck.

i don't know how much they cost but i'd rather get a porsche built 1.8L or 2.0L ....... it'd be MUCH better in the long run in both engine performance and probably reliability too, but im not too sure on the reliability part. But porsche definitly would be a better choice for an engine than VW.

hey i'm way late on this but it's late and i can't be held acountable for my actions. If i'm not mistaken the porsche 4 cyl and the volkswagon 4 cyl use the same block so a VW block is the ecact same thing and will work.

The Type4 914 engine only shares its bellhousing bolt pattern with the VW Type1 engine. They share nothing else in common.

He can however install a Type1 engine.. why he would do this I would never know.. but it has been several months since he posted.

I wonder what he ended up using ??

Hey, does anyone know if the 2.0 flat four was an ohc or ohv?

The 2.0 914 engine is not OHC. The cam is actually below the crank. I'm not quite sure you would call it a OHV either.

The porsche 1.7 and 1.8 engines were taken right out of the vw bus and were vw engines. The 2.0 was an actual porsche engine though.

ummm NO. The 914 1.7 and 1.8 engines dont have the same cams or pistons (higher compression than the bus and a more aggressive cam) The blocks are different also. The bus has the engine oil filler located towards the base of the block. The 914 has its oil filler on the top of the block. Also.. the 1.8 heads have bigger valves than the 1.7 and 1.8 bus.
