hooking up my tach

I have a 96 cavalier 2.2 standard. I have tried to hook up my tach but some have said I need a tach converter and some say I don't. In the instructions it says to hook up the ground, hot, lamp light and - side of the ignition coil which I CAN NOT figure out the ignition coil part. Can it be hooked up without a tach converter? If so how and where?
Thanx

Re: hooking up my tach

the tach has to have a 2 cylander setting since that all it will read. Other wise its not going to do jack. Get the adaptor and do it right and easy way. My autometer only has 4-6-8...There is a stick with a how to in the subforum.
