Oil Sending unit question, 85 Silverado

Hello,

I have a 1985 Silverado 4x4 with a 305. My question is can a sending unit start to wear out? What I mean is I know I am getting good oil pressure. The gauge sits at 0 and when highly reved it starts to move. It just started doing it. Before it sat 30+ until I cleaned the engine. Wire seems to be hook up. What do you think?

Thanks,
The Rev. AC

From what you said, I'd check the wire first. After 21 years of sitting under the hood (especially if near an exhaust manifold), the insulation gets brittle. If it started it after messing around with the wire, it could have broken, but yes, the sending units do go bad but in my experience it happens gradually (steadily reading less and less over a period of weeks or even months.)

Thanks 67 malibu. I went under the hook; moved the wire a little and waalaa, we have pressure registering. Thaks again..
