86 Chevy Difficulty installing Fuel Pump

How do I keep the rod up while installing the pump?

I remember the older small block had a bolt hole in front of the pump rod.
You would screw a bolt in and it would hold the rod in to the cam.
Probably need to remove a shorter bolt first. If you have the engine positioned so the rod in up or in as when you do it so the pump isn't compressing as you tighten the mounting bolts.

Pull the rod out and smear bearing grease on it then put it back in the block and the grease will hold a suction on the rod. Also a good idea to put grease on the pivot point on the pump, helps keep the lever from wearing out.
