Question Backfire & Timing Issue

I just bought a Kelmark GT with a 1776 VW engine .009 Dizzy, 110 Engle cam and Dual Kadron Carbs.

In an earlier post I asked about setting the timing on the dizzy. At idle (approx 600 rpm) the timing light shows the crank to be at 30Deg BTDC. I turned the Dizzy till it read 0- 7.5 (B)TDC and the engine will Not run... Coughs, gags and dies...

I adjusted the Point gap to OEM Specs, (according to Haynes) and was able to get it to 15 Deg BTDC, any less and I get the coughing with backfire through the carbs....

I did notice the Points were worn out (Cam lobe almost gone). Would this make that much of a difference if I changed them out? Pertronix or Points?

Also the Left Kadron/ Solex carb is missing the Venturi on the inside of the carb... . Would anyone know where to get replacement parts for these carbs without having to buy a Whole New setup?

I have a set of Points, condenser, plugs and wires coming in from eBay....

The only time the engine runs smooth is at 2500 RPM or Greater and in Neutral, but NO power at the wheels...Boggs down in gear....

This engine was supposed to have less than 500 miles on it since rebuild, but i'm not too sure now.........

Re: Backfire & Timing Issue

Time the 009 dizzy at 30deg at 3000rpm. It will be about 6deg at idle.
How are you running without a venturi? That may be your problem, as to why it will not run with the timing set so far out. The carb can not pick up fuel without the venturi, probably running on three cylinders.

Re: Backfire & Timing Issue

I have removed the distributor... dismantled it and discovered that one of the flyweights was broken and missing a spring. I'll be ordering a new one this friday....Unless anyone knows where to find a Rebuild Kit for a Bosch .009 Distributor.

Question Re: Backfire & Timing Issue

What is the best type of distributor to use for my engine setup?

1776cc
110 Engal cam
Single Weber 40 DCNF

I removed a self-destructed .009 Bosch

Should I go back with the same type or the NEW Cheap Chineese version from ebay for $39. Then there is the .010 and .050 dist's. what would you choose?

Read here for proper distributor selection.

Remember you can get it cheap. Or you can get it good.

Rarely can you get both.
