Problems with my 71Diamonds & Guns 02-23-2006, 03:10 AM Everytime I turn the engine there always a clunking noise and then sometimes a winding down sound following it. I don't know if it's a carb problem or like a buddy told me could be cheap gas. I've been putting regular gas in this car for about 3 months now since I've bought it and it's doing this all of a sudden. Don't know if I should switch over to premium. The car also idles too fast right when I start it up coudl this be the choke? 71NovaSedan 02-24-2006, 02:19 AM When your car starts up and idles too fast you probably have to adjust the idle screws, they should be located around the linkage on the carb itself. I had the same problem when I installed my new carb on my 71 nova. This might help with the start up problem, if it doesn't it sounds like it might be a starter motor problem, I know a while back one of the screws fell out of the starter, so it was very loose and clunked around when I attempted to start my car up. I would also check your fuel filter since the car dies off, just to make sure fuel can get to the engine to begin with. I just had that problem with a 95 minivan, it would die off as I started it up. 70Nova05 02-24-2006, 01:50 PM Is this only during starting the motor or while it is running? Is it a metalic clunking and then does it sound like an electric motor spinning down? (Starter?) Can you provide some more detail on this Diamonds & Guns 02-24-2006, 05:19 PM Is this only during starting the motor or while it is running? Is it a metalic clunking and then does it sound like an electric motor spinning down? (Starter?) Can you provide some more detail on this While I started putting premium gas in it like my buddy suggested and that fixed the clunking and eltrical winding down problem when I would turn it off. Now all I have is the ideling problem. nova68 02-24-2006, 07:26 PM idle screw like he said in the first post Diamonds & Guns 02-26-2006, 01:10 AM It wasn't any of these things. The choke wasn't set up right, problem solved. Thanks for the input everyone! Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
